Headlines: First 2 Singaporean bloggers jailed for making racist remarks online.
Message Conveyed:
1 - S'pore is a multi-racial country, racists and racism is a taboo
2 - You are responsible for what u post on your blog
I'm in 2 minds about this. I acknowledge Singapore's a multi racial country and the government had been working hard trying to promote racial harmony amongst the population all these years, thus racism and racists are forbidden and considered illegal. Having said that, i have to point out as well that a blog is a diary/journal that allows the blogger/writer to pen down WHATEVER he/she feels like writing. I know many of us bloggers are using a blog to pen down our rants, bitchings, anger, disappointments and so much more. A blog is basically a tool for us to vent out everything we felt, it allows us to express ourselves instead of keeping everything inside.
The convicted blogger mentioned in the interview that he did only expected his friends to read them and he wrote the post to vent his anger, and did not expect such a huge number of people to suddenly read his blog. This goes a long way to show that the unexpected always comes when we least expects it. It also expound to us that afew clicks of the mouse and keyboard can land u a jail sentence and a black mark on your record FOR LIFE!
I can't help but say this (hey pls dun sue me ok!) : being bloggers in Singapore means we have to blog extremely wisely and carefully. You don't get fined for owning a monkey as a pet in other countries but u get fined for littering here. Got this message? Good if u do, but if u don't, i'm not bothering to explain it. I don't wanna get sued or prosecuted for making unpropitious remarks afterall do i? Peace for all, cheers!
